What to order: Wild boar gnocchi
About: This small oasis lies amongst the bustling and gritty city streets of Budapest. For lunch, pick a choice from the course options: appetizer, soup, main, dessert, or side. I had the white asparagus soup, wild boar and tapioca pudding with cherries. I also got to try the fermented cucumbers, a Hungarian staple, which were salty goodness. I tried it all with a Copenhagen sparkling tea to cool down and a cappuccino to finish.

What to order: Lamb Chops
About: On the Pest side of the river, centrally located to shops and sites is Verno House hotel and its restaurant FLAVA. And yes, it’s full of it. The waitstaff were friendly and the food fulfilling. I tried the bulgar salad with pomegranate seeds, lamb with yogurt mint sauce, and wild broccoli. You also get a choice of bread (sourdough, naan, or focaccia) for dipping, as well as a great drink menu to choose from.

What to order: You’re in the Chef’s hands
In a sleek space with an open kitchen where the chefs prepare a vegetable-centered delicious contemporary meal. The team prepares, presents, and explains the 15 courses of sustainable traditional Hungarian dishes with modern twists. I was lucky enough to have a special course prepared by the chef for our party, which was apple bites with juniper flowers. Other highlights included sourdough bread with house made butter, cured Mangalica (a furry Hungarian pig) bites, and crispy M488 rice cake with meat and white asparagus with a paprika based sauce. The amusing presentation, including picking a poppy out of the table arrangement to sprinkle seeds on a dish, as well as a bouquet of herbs beside a miso paste to dip in was pure theatre. Don’t miss an evening with SALT, it will leave you anything but salty.

What to order: Chocolate croissant
Eating at: Artisan bakery, Budapest, Hungary. If you want a chocolate croissant this is the place to go. They also have delicious local options like pistachio and raspberry danishes, flat breads with veggies or ham and tomato, and even cheese cake. The line might be long but the staff keep it moving so don’t be afraid to join the queue. The coffee is great and you can get a side order of fresh orange juice to start your day.

What to order: Young Deer steak
In the Buda side of the city within walking distance of the gorgeous chain bridge and Castle tunnel stands Stand 25. Chefs Szabina Szulló and Tamás Széll lead their team at this comfortable, lively version of their fancier restaurant Stand. At Stand 25, traditional Hungarian starters like duck liver terrine with fruit compote or goulash are available along side more broadly European options like burrata bruschetta. Mains include two options of wild game – young deer steak and wild boar stew. Other options include pork, beef steak, or trout fillet. For dessert I had rice pudding with cherries and a local option suggested by our waiter, Somóli, which is a sponge cake with cream. Stand 25 is well worth the trek to Buda to fill your belly.
